Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy application is a non-surgical cosmetic solution that aims to reduce the problematic areas of the body such as excess weight, cellulite, body contouring and facial and neck rejuvenation. In this method, injections containing drugs, minerals and vitamins are applied.

What is Mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy, commonly known as bio-rejuvenation or biorevitalization, is a technique used to rejuvenate the skin by transdermal injection of an important multivitamin solution and natural-derived plant extracts that are thought to improve the symptoms of skin aging. Mesotherapy treatment was pioneered by Michel Pistor, a French doctor who initially developed tinnitus treatment or tinnitus treatment in the management of ear and pain.

Nowadays, this treatment method has a wide range of applications from treatment of medical conditions to improvement of physical appearance. This technique is used to treat pain, muscle and vascular diseases, eliminate cellulite, treat aging skin, and apply microscopic amounts of pharmaceutical drugs, vitamins, homeopathic agents, and even natural extracts to support weight loss. The main ingredient of the liquid solution is phosphatidylcholine, an organic compound found in soy products. It also contains a small amount of bile salt, which keeps the main component soluble. The exact formula injected into the skin is variable and will largely depend on the type of condition that it needs to treat.

How is Mesotherapy Performed?

Prior to administration, topical anesthesia procedures are performed to minimize pain and leakage. Mesotherapy involves superficial injections of small hyaluronic acid directly into the mesoderm (middle layer) and epidermis.  This helps to nourish, rejuvenate, increase cell activity, and stimulate collagen and elastin production. After mesotherapy injections, the skin will look bright, moist, radiant and firmer. For mesotherapy to be effective, 4 and 6 sessions are recommended at intervals of 2 to 4 weeks. Some superficial swellings, redness, and small scars of injection may be seen temporarily between 24 and 48 hours after administration. These symptoms may last a little longer around the eyes.

A brief overview of exactly what happens during the procedure is important.

Why is Hyaluronic Acid Used in Mesotherapy?  Can Other Active Ingredients Be Used?

Hyaluronic acid is produced naturally in the body, where it accelerates cell renewal and stores the water that the body needs. This allows the skin to be renewed, revitalized and repaired. There are many factors that lead to a tired looking skin, including the natural aging process and the stresses of daily life.  Over time, our body produces less hyaluronic acid. The skin loses its elasticity, appears drooping, yellowish and tired. This is particularly evident in the face, décolleté and hand areas that are exposed to the effects of excessive sun exposure, physical activity and other external environmental influences.  In the natural aging process, the body can no longer be fed enough with important nutrients to efficiently renew the skin itself. This is where mesotherapy comes as a preventive or supportive measure. The active ingredients used in mesotherapy are not only individually selected for the patient, but are also optimally matched to the specific needs of the different skin regions whose composition is adapted accordingly. Therefore, doctors use their own active ingredient types. For example, a specially adapted compound can be applied to moisturize and revitalize sensitive skin in the eye area.

What are the Types of Mesotherapy?

There are generally two types of mesotherapy. The first consists of a mesolift that reaches a depth specifically designed for lines and wrinkles resulting from excessive dryness, where non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid (also found with your body’s own proteins) is injected into deeper layers of the skin. The second consists of a broad-spectrum micro-needling, where the entire face is deeply moistened using a mesopene containing a rich serum of hyaluronic acid.

Is Mesotherapy a Painful Procedure?

Mesotherapy is definitely not a painful procedure. The injections used in this embodiment are 0.5 mm smaller than those used conventionally. The same is true for their length adapted to multi-surface injections. There is no bleeding or leakage in mesotherapy. These injections are done by hand and placed under the skin.

What are the Side Effects and Risks of Mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy does not cause huge side effects.  However, as with any application, there may be minor side effects.  In this application, some of the common side effects are;

  • Temporary edema (there may also be swelling from injury or inflammation),

Erythema (redness of the skin),

  • Light itching,
  • Minor pain (there may be very little pain in the treated area),
  • Skin hyperesthesia (minimal increases in skin sensitivity),
  • Rarely nausea, diarrhea and vomiting,
  • Formation of tender subcutaneous nodules in the treated area,
  • Pigmentation problems and hypersensitive skin reactions (such as rashes).

There may also be allergic reactions to certain drugs and components used in mesotherapy. Therefore, it is very important to find out if you are allergic to the components before performing mesotherapy. Although mesotherapy offers very promising results to treat a number of skin problems, it may still require detailed research to confirm the practice of assisting the body to remove natural fat. The safety effects of this treatment have not yet been confirmed because mesotherapy has been studied not as a cosmetic application but as a pain relief treatment. It is always best to consult an experienced doctor before performing mesotherapy or any other cosmetic treatment.
