What is Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer or fat injections is the process of injecting fat cells from any part of the body into another part of the body by means of injection. The fat part is mostly abdominal.  The fat cells given to the needed parts continue their lives without losing their function in their new regions and act as a filler in the injected regions. The success rate of fat transfer depends on the function of the cells given to the required regions. If the fat cells lose their function and disappear, after 1-2 weeks the whole filling effect loses its function and the dead fats melt.

What Should Be Done Before Fat Transfer?

Blood thinners similar to aspirin and its derivatives should not be taken 7-10 days before the fat transfer procedure. However, the patient to be treated should always inform the doctor about his / her important illnesses and medications that he has been using permanently.

How To Do Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer is usually performed with local anesthesia. It is performed together with general anesthesia during heavy operations such as fat injection process to give fullness to cheek area during face lift application. Oils taken from the body are passed through some special applications (such as cleaning, centrifugation process) and injected into the area to be injected into a sterilized syringe. There is no incision during this application, so no scarring occurs.

What Should Be Done After Fat Transfer?

As soon as the fat transfer application is over, ice compresses should be performed to reduce the swelling and bruises that may occur in the treated area. Ice compresses are made with the help of gel or special bags filled with ice. Approximately every 15-20 minutes per hour is applied by circulating to the application area. After the application, especially the first 2 days, a swelling may occur beyond the level of fat transfer in the treated area. This situation decreases in a short time and returns to normal. However, this period may be slightly prolonged in the operations around the lip and swelling may rarely occur in high amounts. The treated area can be washed 1 day after application and skin moisturizing creams can be applied.

It should be avoided from direct sunlight and any vapor as it may cause complications in the application.  The fat transfer procedure, except for the first days, usually does not cause any discomfort to the extent that may affect the patient’s daily life. It is necessary to rest due to excess edema that may occur during the first 2 days and redness that may occur in some areas. Because of the fat injection process, small bandages placed on the treated area are removed 3-4 hours after or the next day.The doctor may give antibiotic medications for a possible risk of infection.
